And on top of that, RSS is really bad for social stuff. Imagine if everyone had to have their own website for social media to work, and you had to check every one of those websites every few minutes just to make sure that nobody posted anything new. Even if you had a program to do it for you, it’s just not something that can scale up.
Instead, a few clever folks went through several iterations to create something called ActivityPub, which is how the Fediverse works. Instead of just offering a file for people to look at, people can ask to subscribe to your feeds, and then you’ll send them a copy of new posts as they come in. This way, people aren’t hammering your websites every few minutes to see if something changed, and you can just tell them.
